History / Facts

  • Till 1961, Tribal Area was called  “Excluded Area” and later on in 1961, it was  declared as “De-Excluded Area”
  • In 2000, status of Tehsil tribal area was declared
  • Total area is 6,475 Sq. km.
  • Total Population of the area was 2,00,000 (1,20,000 men & 80,000 women)

Importance of Location

  • Balochistan in the west (135 km boundary)
  • KPK (D.I. Khan) in the North (35 km boundary)
  • Punjab in the East (D.G.Khan district boundary)
  • Rajanpur in the South
  • Tribal Area makes a Buffer Zone for Punjab
  • No terrorists can approach Multan and other areas if Tribal Area is secure

Tummandari System

  • 'Tumman’ means a tribe
  • ‘Tummandar’ refers tribal chief sardar
  • This system existed since time immemorial
  • The British retained / modified Tummandari to control the tribes and Tummandar became Magistrates. They use to collect dues, settled disputes and assisted in administrative issues over which they also received Inams / Jagirs
  • Tummandari System was abolished in 1947

Jirga System

  • British formalized the Jirga System, wherein Jirga decided cases as per balochi trend and later on  in 1994, Jirga System was abolished
  • Now, District Civil and Procedural Law: Cr.P.C and  Pakistan Penal code has been promulgated
